State prisons played an indispensable part in the terror of the Third Reich, incarcerating many hundreds of thousands of men and women during the Nazi era. This important book illuminates the previously unknown world of Nazi prisons, their victims, and the judicial and penal officials who built and operated this system of brutal legal terror. Nikolaus Wachsmann describes the operation and function of legal terror in the Third Reich and brings Nazi prisons to life through the harrowing stories of individual inmates. Drawing on a vast array of archival materials, he traces the series of changes in prison policies and practice that led eventually to racial terror, brutal violence, slave labor, starvation, and mass killings. Wachsmann demonstrates that “ordinary” legal officials were ready collaborators who helped to turn courts and prisons into key components in the Nazi web of terror. And he concludes with a discussion of the whitewash of the Nazi legal system in postwar West Germany.

Le camp de concentration (KL) est constitutif du nazisme. Il en est le miroir le plus fidèle. Dès les premières heures du régime, il sert d'abord à éliminer les opposants politiques dans des bâtiments réquisitionnés en pleine ville, puis très vite est érigé hors des zones urbaines selon une architecture particulière. De concentration des prisonniers sans droits, il élargit ses fonctions selon les besoins de l'État : instrument de la terreur idéologique, il devient la machine de l'épuration sociale (malades mentaux, asociaux, homosexuels), le centre d'une économie du travail par le mortel esclavage de la main-d'œuvre (les prisonniers russes et les Slaves au premier chef), un univers de convois ferrovaires et de rampes de sélection, d'expérimentations médicales selon les pathologies des différentes catégories de déportés, l'épicentre enfin du génocide des populations juives et tziganes en provenance de tous les pays occupés. D'emblée, le camp fut le règne de la violence absolue, sitôt que la garde en fut confiée à la SS des camps dont les rangs s'ouvrirent aux militants de base sans autre formation idéologique que les sanglantes batailles de rues. Le camp ne répond pas seulement aux évolutions du régime nazi, il est un univers en soi avec ses propres règles, mélange de bureaucratisme tatillon et d'arbitraire déchaîné, sur lequel entend régner Himmler. Un univers dont les Allemands ne pouvaient ignorer l'existence, tant il fit l'objet de reportages écrits, radiophoniques et cinématographiques afin que chacun sache de quel prix se payait la moindre dissidence. Un univers dont nombre de survivants périrent aux dernières heures dans les marches forcées par lesquelles les nazis voulurent effacer les traces de leur crime devant la progression des armées russes et alliées. Nikolaus Wachsmann, professeur d'histoire contemporaine à Birkbeck College (université de Londres), a écrit la première histoire globale du camp nazi de 1933 à 1945, puis de sa survivance dans la mémoire occidentale. Un de ces livres majeurs qui, par le recours à des milliers de pages d'archives administratives ou de témoignages personnels, par le jeu d'échelles du centre du pouvoir hitlérien à la condition du détenu au ras de son châlit, marquent une étape dans la discipline.
